NXTPRO

A theoretical heat pump becomes lifelike thanks to Augmented Reality

From now on, nxtpro students can practice their skills on a virtual heat pump, thanks to an Augmented Reality app that we built in collaboration with Soulmade.

nxtpro helps SMEs in Flanders and Brussels train, retrain and refocus their employees.
A course for central heating installers and refrigeration technicians covers better understanding a heat pump, but it's not easy to get such a device in a classroom. nxtpro came to us for a solution.

In a short but tough process, Epyc managed to always take concrete steps forward with the various parties around the table (lecturer, hardware suppliers, and Syntra). The end result is an AR application with the essence of the HVAC training on heat pumps. Students can now test their knowledge on the AR model, and we can quickly introduce candidate students to the learning content, making the process “more tangible”.

The challenge

Develop a learning solution that allows students to learn how a heat pump works without it being physically present in the classroom.

Have students discover various procedures, including installing or defrosting sanitary heating.

Make the theory visually appealing and understandable to a broad target group.

Our approach

Determining a learning method

We quickly came to the conclusion that Augmented Reality is the best fit for nxtpro's challenge. Together with our partner Soulmade, who has extensive experience in the field of Augmented Reality, we built a heat pump that students could place in a real-life situation via an iPad.

Leveraging AR potential

Via a customized app, students can see the heat pump, but also observe the components inside by lifting a virtual valve. As a result, they see even more than is possible in the real world.

Logistically, this saves a lot of time, money and effort.

There is no need for a physical heat pump in the classroom; all students need is a tablet with nxtpro's AR app. As a result, the lesson can also be given at any location.

Applicability in practice

In addition to AR, Object Recognition was also used. This is a tool that allows all information to be projected onto the physical device via an iPad. As a result, our app also has applications outside the classroom, and the instruction booklet comes to life on the job.

From learning from a booklet to real-life experiences via an app

We created a personalized interface so players can see their progress right away. They receive immediate feedback about their choices, which promotes the learning process.

Turn the right knobs!

Screwdriver ready? Go!

Hold your tablet camera in front of you and watch the heat pump come to life in the classroom in front of you.

Have you already found the right screws to tighten to fix the problem? Zoom in and look deep into the heat pump to see where the problem is occurring.

This way you can get the job done in no time!
